What is a PNR and How to Use It

A PNR (Passenger Name Record) is a 6-character alphanumeric code that identifies your flight booking. It is assigned at the time of booking and appears in your confirmation email and e-ticket. You use the PNR along with your last name to access your booking on the airline website, check in online, or retrieve your boarding pass.

If you booked through HappyFares, your airline PNR is in the booking confirmation email sent to you at the time of booking. It is also visible under "My Bookings" in the HappyFares app.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PNR number?

PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is a unique 6-character alphanumeric code assigned to every flight booking. Airlines use it to identify your booking, seat, baggage, and meal requests. Your PNR is in your booking confirmation email and on your e-ticket.

How do I check PNR status for any airline?

Go to the respective airline's website (e.g. goindigo.in for IndiGo, airindia.in for Air India) and find "Manage Booking". Enter your PNR and last name to view your booking status. You can also use the DGCA Air Sewa mobile app, which allows PNR-based flight status checks across all DGCA-licensed Indian carriers.

What does "Confirmed" PNR status mean?

"Confirmed" means your seat is reserved and your booking is active. Your flight is scheduled and no action is needed. If status is "Waitlisted", you may not have a confirmed seat — contact the airline immediately.

My PNR is not being found. What should I do?

Check that you are: (1) using the 6-character airline PNR, not any agent reference number, (2) entering the last name exactly as spelled during booking, (3) on the correct airline website. If you booked via HappyFares, your airline PNR is in the booking confirmation email.

Can I check flight PNR status using the DGCA Air Sewa app?

Yes. The DGCA Air Sewa app (available on iOS and Android) allows Indian travellers to check flight status by PNR for any DGCA-licensed domestic carrier including IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India, Akasa Air, and others. The app also supports flight delay/cancellation complaints.

How many days before the flight can I check my PNR status?

You can check your PNR status from the moment the ticket is booked and confirmed, right up to departure — there is no minimum or maximum number of days. The PNR is active as soon as the booking is ticketed; a brand-new PNR may take a few minutes to appear while the airline system updates, and it stays checkable through the flight and for a short period after for refunds or claims.

Why is my flight PNR status not showing or not updating?

Common reasons a PNR will not show or has not updated: (1) the booking was made minutes ago and is still syncing — wait a few minutes and retry; (2) a typo in the 6-character PNR or last name, which must match the ticket exactly; (3) you booked through an agent or OTA, so the airline PNR can differ from the booking reference on your receipt — always use the airline PNR; (4) brief airline-system maintenance. If it still will not show, your airline PNR is in your HappyFares confirmation email and app.
